This bestselling dystopian novel is about a society where everything is the same. In this novel, there are no colors, you get assigned a random parent at birth, and people don't have memories of things like snow and have never experienced sunshine. On Selection Day (when your job is chosen for you based on your volunteering tendencies), Jonas's name doesn't get called until the end, where he receives the coveted job of Receiver. Not knowing what this is, Jonas is understandably confused, so when he shows up for job training the next day, he is surprised to learn that he will be receiving memories of the past like sunshine and colors, which were previously unknown to him. He starts to find injustices in the "perfect" world he lives in and starts to try to change them. Like any good dystopian novel this book will have you on the edge of your seat.
I enjoyed this book because it was very interesting in terms of how the memories got passed down, but I would have liked an ending that was less of a cliffhanger.

9/10 I just didn't like the way it was left on a cliffhanger and wish that the other books were more like the first book. Loved the way the book was written though and thought the plot was very well thought out.
